Ho model train basic guide

HO Model Train

One train enthusiast might want a model train that runs through a garden outside.  Another train enthusiast might have extensive space for spreading out a large set of train tracks and someone else might have a smaller space but wants to fill it with a couple of different train tracks.  To fulfill all of these different needs, model train makers have made several different sizes of trains.

The most popular size of the large scale trains is size O.  The scale for O is 1/48th.  Meaning it is one 48th the size of a regular sized train.  The gauge for O is 1 ¼ inches.  Many of these larger sized trains are used outdoors in gardens.  Of course this does not fill the needs of everyone in the train world.

The HO gauge is half the size of the larger O scale.  HO stands for “Half of O”.  The HO scale is 1/87.  HO trains use the standard size track gauge of 16.5mm.  HO scale is a popular size to use in layouts.  They are small enough to be able to use creative scenery with well-designed track plans in a reasonable amount of space.  But they are also large enough to be able to accommodate a great deal of detail in finer models.  They are also large enough for children to handle without the risk of small parts or tiny components being damaged.  With the HO scale being able to provide the balance between the detail of larger scales and the lower space requirements of smaller scales, it is a highly sought after railroad line by train hobbyists compared to other scales.

HO scale model trains first appeared in the UK during the 1930′s.  They were introduced as an alternative to OO scale.  But OO scale was already established in the UK and therefore HO scale had a hard time making any real commercial headway.  Luckily, the hobbyists of the United States high demand of a realistic based toy during the late 1950′s allowed the HO scale model trains to really take off throughout the 1960′s and continued right up to today.  More then two thirds of train lovers have ranked HO scale as their favorite train scale.
Due to the popularity of the HO scale, a huge array of locomotives, sets, accessories and rolling stock are made by many different companies.  Train lovers can find a large array of HO scale train sets with ready-to-run trains and modular track, craftsman grade kits, supplies for building models from scratch, and even high detailed limited-edition locomotive models made of brass.  Hobbyists will even go to the lengths of seeking out not only local hobby shop supplies, but look to global suppliers and foreign manufacturers to find that exact piece to complete their layout.

So if you have dreams of seeing a vast landscape with rolling hills or a small town and all of the things you think the towns people of your landscape will enjoy, the HO scale model trains are for you.  Awe your friends with watching your magnificent locomotive chugging down the track, winding through the hills and through a tunnel.  The HO scale model trains can make all of your dreams come true.

Nutrition For Running A Marathon

June 27, 2011 by

When considering all the characteristics of marathon training and groundwork, nutrition is one of the most significant subjects for which to carefully concern and give the maximum concentration. A cautiously planned training program or hard practice is of slight worth if a runner fails to meet his or her nutritional necessities for long distance working out and competitions. Proper nutrition, both before the race and during is important if you expect to do extremely well in any running event. When you run lengthy distances, your energy necessities increase. Throughout continuous work out such as marathon running, total body energy needs raise 10 to 20 times higher than resting values. Runners required eating more of the suitable foods to stimulate their muscles.

When someone is practicing for running a marathon there are many significant nutrition supplies that you must be attentive of.

Mainly, we all should recognize what we consume. This is very significant when practicing for a marathon as your body will require the correct minerals and nutrients because of the physical hard work it is going through. This is the main cause that you are supposed to have a well-balanced meal throughout your marathon training and keep away from rubbish food, for the reason that it will not supply your body with the nutritional importance it needs.

The power you have to obtain throughout your practicing sessions and during the marathon, mainly come from the glycogen stores in your muscles and blood stream. The more glycogen you have accumulated, the better you will execute.

The best method to boost the amount of glycogen accumulated in your body is to raise the amount of carbs in your structure. Carbohydrates are busted down into glucose. Glucose is a form of sugar. Glucose is then busted down more into glycogen. It is this glycogen that is then accumulated in the muscles and blood stream and is allocating at any time your body needs power.

Week before to the marathon there is another procedure called carbohydrate loading. Carbohydrate loading is escalating the percentage of compound carbohydrates in your meal for a period of time. The purpose of this process is to load more glycogen into your structure that can then be released as power when your body needs it throughout the race.

Sports nutrition is a part that frequently makes the most attention and misunderstanding as well. The topic of sports nutrition is common with irregularity and challenge.

Running for Success

June 25, 2011 by

Though it may not seem like it when we’re drenched in sweat and our legs feel like lead, marathon running is as mental as physical. When we’re exhausted, continuing consists of mind over matter. This takes enormous mental power. Once developed, this skill can be transferred from the racetrack to the boardroom.

Training for a marathon is an ideal place to improve the skills needed to achieve success in business: strategy, clear objectives, and a positive attitude. These techniques are also crucial to completing a marathon. Without them, even the most fanatically fit athlete is doomed to fail. Through physical training we can develop and master these skills.

In business, investment and marathon, a well-planned strategy is essential. In each situation, we must commit to our plan, yet be willing to adapt it if it isn’t working. Though strategy can be complex or simple, with our first marathon it’s best to choose the latter. Simplification is a great way to remove self-imposed pressure. This can mean concentrating on maintaining a steady heart rate or pace. We need to do this during both training and our marathon, since sustaining this relaxed-focus helps remove the barrier of performance anxiety.

The strategy of shifting attention to our body’s sensations is called association, and it’s a tactic used by many elite athletes. The self-focused introvert may find this more comfortable than directing attention outside. The outgoing extrovert, however, may be more suited to the disassociation technique. This involves turning our awareness outward. According to a report published in The Journal of Sports Psychology: “ Considerable evidence exists to link disassociation strategies with increased pain tolerance during endurance tasks.” Disassociation may also useful during a dull seminar, or an extended visit from our mother-in-law.

Just as business meetings have objectives, so should your marathon training. Whatever your personal goal, it needs to be specific, measurable, and reasonable. Similar to our professional life, these can be accomplished by choosing to focus on either the process or the outcome. In our business life a process goal would be improving our customer relation skills, while an outcome goal would be making X amount more dollars. For your first marathon, process goals are better. Since meeting them may be as simple as adhering to our training schedule, they guarantee success. As we all know, success produces self-confidence. Developing this gives us courage to challenge ourselves to achieve greater victories. Outcome goals, like beating a rival, are more risky. Since external factors can interfere with them, they are harder to succeed at.

Maintaining a positive attitude is crucial to accomplishment. Without belief in eventual success, we’ll quit at the slightest obstacle. This is true both in career and running. Everyday, marathon training teaches us persistence through discomfort. This is essential. Without challenging ourselves we can never progress to higher success. Besides the things we tell ourselves, a positive attitude also includes motivating inner images.

Many superior athletes use mental imagery, or guided visualization. These include Marion Clignet, 1996 and 2000 silver medallist on the French cycling team, and 6 times Masters winner Jack Nicklaus. Medical experts have also tested this method. A recent article published in the Journal of Sports Science states: “The power of mental imagery in sport performance has been widely noted. Keep your thinking and mental rehearsing of your upcoming races positive and it may contribute to new personal records.”

The importance of mental imagery is also noted in Olympic runner Jeff Galloway’s Marathon: You Can Do It. In this book, Galloway encourages us to rehearse parts of our marathon every day. He says that this will help us prepare for and find solutions to problems we may encounter and help us “tough it out.” This strength doesn’t end in out legs and lungs. Finishing a marathon makes us more tenacious, helping us bring home “the gold” in business.

Become A Relaxed Marathoner

June 24, 2011 by

At the starting line, one can always see the determined faces of runners.  Even before they take a single step, they already fix their eyes on the finish line.  And in their overwhelming desire to win the race, they sometimes show signs of tension and stress.  But if you’re a highly competitive athlete, the tension is just part of the job.

That is why it is already axiomatic for endurance runners and other athletes to have physical strength and endurance, will power, and discipline.  It is also part and parcel of their job to encounter a number of physical and health concerns that come as a result of strenuous physical activity.

Long-distance runners, for example, are very prone to fatigue and muscle cramps.  Most marathons involve a long-distance run of about 42 kilometers or about 26 miles.   These runs can be either on-road or off-road.

The marathon event is actually a centuries-old sporting event that traces its roots to Greek legend about Pheidippides, a soldier who was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens for the purpose of bringing the news about the defeat of the Persians in the “Battle of Marathon.” It is said that the Greek solider ran all the way from the battlefield to Athens so that he could announce the news of Greek victory as soon as possible.  The marathon race was revived during the first modern Olympics in 1896.

It can be said that the marathon run of ancient Greece and the modern-day races share the same thing:  both runs take a toll on the runner.   The training alone is enough to cause physical stress on any runner.  Recreational runners usually target a training run of about 32 kilometers while elite marathon runners can have a weekly mileage of at least 160 kilometers.

One can just imagine the sheer pressure put on a runner’s knees and leg muscles.  Muscle cramps, which are experienced by most if not all runners and other endurance athletes, is an exercise-induced muscle pain that results from fluid loss and electrolyte imbalance.  Overexertion, structural disorders, prolonged sitting, and inappropriate leg or sitting positions can also cause muscle pains. The most commonly affected muscle groups include the back of the leg and calf (gastrocnemius);  the back of the thigh (hamstrings); and the front of the thighs (quadriceps).  Cramps can be as tolerable as a slight tic or it can be painfully agonizing.  Usually lasting only a few seconds to as long as 15 minutes, muscle cramps can become recurring difficulties even for the most well-trained athletes.

Muscle cramps or muscle pain does not only affect runners or athletes.  Even people who do not engage in sports may get muscle spasms.  In fact, muscle pain is the second most common reason for doctor visits in the United States.  But for endurance runners and other athletes who engage in long periods of physical activity, the problem of muscle pain is not only a distinct possibility during training or in an actual event.   It can also afflict them at night long after a running event.

To address this problem, most endurance and marathon runners have a doctor or sports therapist as a member of the running team.  The medical professional or health care specialist helps monitor the physical condition of the runner.   If necessary, the sports therapist may even ask the runner to take a muscle relaxant after a marathon event or during breaks in a long-distance, multi-day running event. The muscle relaxant helps the athlete to regain physical shape by removing muscle tension and pain associated with overexertion.  A muscle relaxant like Carisoprodol is often administered to relieve pain and discomfort that comes with muscle sprains, strains, and spasms.

Over the counter muscle relaxants are available although many doctors prefer to give athletes prescription drugs like Carisoprodol.   The efficacy of the muscle relaxant is not only important in terms of relieving the pain but also in helping ensure that the runner or athlete is able to complete an event with little or no discomfort.   Indeed, the use of a muscle relaxant drug has become a necessity for many athletes who compete to win.  It is no longer enough to train and have the right equipment.  The availability of medications that will help them conquer pain during a competition or after an event is important to their sports career.   Knowing the limitations of the human body, even the most hardy and experienced athletes need to relax their muscles naturally and through appropriately administered medications.  Winning a race does not only take strength.  Sometimes, a runner must make sure that his muscles are in a relaxed state so that he can push his “engine” to work all the way to the finish line.

Getting Ready to Run a Marathon

June 23, 2011 by

I love talking with people who are considering running a marathon. I think it is one of the best things that someone can do with their life and health. It is quite funny, however, to sit down with someone that is considering running a marathon to see what their plan of preparation is for their big run. Quite often people have no real plan for preparation.

People will find it very difficult to be ready to run a marathon with success if they haven’t taken weeks or even months to adequately prepare for it. You see, running a marathon is no simple undertaking. Very few (if any) people could do absolutely no preparation and and still be successful in the just over twenty-six mile race. So I love the days when I get to sit down with a prospective marathoner and help them create a preparation plan that suits their needs and time frame while helping them adequately prepare for their big race.

I will share some basic tips for marathon preparation here. Keep in mind that these are only basic tips and that there is much more to be learned and understood before you sign up for the next race. First, I’d suggest that everyone who desires to run a marathon makes a time to talk with a trainer or a fitness coach that can help them along their way. I’ll suggest that there is no better way to prepare for a marathon than to meet with someone that knows what they are talking about and get their suggestions.     Another great tip for potential marathon runners is to get a few books and magazines and the topic and just begin to read all you can about it. See what you can learn from pieces of writing that have been written by experts on the subject. You see, in essence, both of my first tips are designed to get you to get help in the process of marathon preparation. You will be far more likely to succeed this way than if you go into it alone.

You may be surprised to learn that there are a large amount of training programs designed to help almost anyone get in shape to run a marathon. I’d suggest that you get your hands on a few of these schedules and then meet with your fitness advisor to see what is the best plan for you. One of the biggest ways that many people fail is not having a specific training program to stick to.

Regardless of when you plan to run a marathon, it is a great idea to get out their and begin running now. Even if you can only jog around your block, the point is to start running now. Slowly get your body used to running and you’ll be much further ahead when it comes for the hard training weeks that precede a marathon. So get educated and then get moving. You’ll be well on your way to enjoying the pleasure of a successful marathon run.

Five Tips on Shopping for Running Shoes

June 22, 2011 by

Does your typical trip to the shoe store involve trying on a few pairs of shoes that look nice, walking around in them for 30 seconds, and then paying for one of them at the counter? If this is you, you are not alone. Most people shop for shoes this way. However, picking the right pair of running shoes should command more of your time and focus.

A standard shoe store will have multiple brands and as much as a dozen pairs of shoes for each brand. Knowing which pair of running shoes is ideal for you can be very difficult. We all have a tendency to want to figure it out for ourselves. The best thing to do is find a qualified sales associate to help, but most often we’re in a store with a sales associate whose only training is where to locate the box in the back should you choose to buy. The following tips will help you find the right shoe for you should you find yourself in the shoe store with little to no educated help.

First, go only to stores that carry name brand running shoes and if possible ask for a trained salesperson. They may have someone on staff that has been properly trained but is elsewhere at the moment. If you can find someone who knows what they are doing, they can walk you through the process of buying the right pair of running shoes and you can be confident that the shoes in their store are good quality.

Second, know whether you are looking for shoes designed with “motion-control” in mind or designed with “comfort and support” in mind. A shoe that controls the motion of your foot is best for someone that has a very flexible foot or over-pronates as they run. Someone this flexible is also more likely to have a lower arch in their foot. However, if you have a fairly rigid foot and high arch then you more likely need greater support and would look for shoes that emphasize support.

Every brand of running shoes will have varying levels of motion control and support. Each shoe at the shoe store should identify the level of motion control and support. If it is not displayed next to the shoe, ask to see the manufacturer’s catalog. Within the catalog, along with the size and width information, will be a short description of the shoe including what type of performance the shoe was designed for. This information can also be found readily on the Internet and in running magazines.

Third, GET THE RIGHT SHOE SIZE. The right shoe type is only going to help you if you are wearing the right size. It is amazing how many people don’t wear the right size shoe. If you have not been measured in a while, be sure to take the opportunity at the store to measure your foot with a Brannock device. It is beyond the scope of this article, but you can search “Brannock device” on the Internet for instruction on how to use this device.

Fourth, give your shoes a try. Walking around with one foot in your new shoe and the other foot bare is not going to give you an adequate assessment of the shoe. A good shoe store should have a treadmill to afford you the opportunity to try out the shoes and see how they work. You may find that your feet are different while running and you shoes no longer fit. You may find that you are a size 8 Med while walking, but need an 81/2 to give your toes adequate space while running. The best way to know is to try them out. Don’t be afraid to try on several pairs either. That is why there are 50 pairs of shoes on the wall.

Finally, once you have found a good pair of shoes, stick with it. This is where the Internet becomes truly wonderful. Fashion and style are always changing. So while you may have found a great pair of running shoes at your local store in the past, it may not be there anymore. Once you’ve found a great style of shoes in the right size, the Internet can be a great place to find that same brand and type forever.

Maximize the Performance of Your Running Shoes by Keeping Them Dry

June 20, 2011 by

If you are a runner, your most important, and really your only tool is your running shoes. This critical tool will be well used and consequently must be properly cared for in order to extend their life.

One of the most important things you can do with your running shoes is to store them properly. Keeping your shoes dry between runs is easily one of the best and easiest ways to prolong the life of you running shoes. Naturally, your shoes are going to get wet as you run either from the environment of from sweat. Either way, this moisture accelerates breakdown of the matrix in the sole that supports your foot. The moisture also causes the fabric in the upper to begin to relax causing your shoes to be looser. By drying you shoes immediately after running, you are giving the support matrix in you sole time to recover it’s form from being compressed and giving your upper opportunity to stiffen up.

The best way to dry you shoe is to place them in an open space where there is cool dry air flow. Never put your shoes next to a heater or in direct sunlight to dry as direct dry heat and sunlight can weaken the leather and fabrics in you shoes causing them to crack and fail. In addition, UV light can have damaging effects on rubber causing it to break down and wear out faster. So look for a place that is never in direct sunlight but does have a good airflow. In non-humid environments, this would be a place such as high up on a shelf on a back patio, where the roof protects from direct sunlight, but there outside exposed to the cool breeze. In humid environments this would be indoors where the air has been dehumidified.

Before leaving your shoes to dry, be sure to first remove the insoles giving the air access to the sole of your shoe. You can also improve the rate of drying by elevating your shoes, and if they are really wet, tuck a rag or other cloth inside the shoe for a while to absorb the excess moisture prior to leaving to air dry.

If you are an avid runner, chances are that you will probably need your shoes more frequently than they are ready for. It usually takes more than 24 hours to fully dry and therefore it is best to have a second pair of shoes that you can alternate.

By giving your shoes time to breathe and return to their fully dry state before using again, you will dramatically extend the life of you running shoes and consequently save money. Additionally, fully dry shoes means better support of you feet and body which means better performance out of your run.
